Design & Presence
The Kai Rattan Dining Chair balances a disciplined solid wood profile with the light permeability of natural cane webbing. Proportioned with an upright back and compact footprint, its silhouette tucks cleanly along dining tables while preserving clear pathways through dining spaces. The hand-tensioned cane back panel allows ambient light and sightlines to filter through, avoiding the heavy visual mass of conventional solid dining chairs.
The surrounding framework is constructed entirely from solid wood. Each timber section is individually chosen to align continuous grain flow through the upright stiles, cross-rails, and tapered legs. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery locks the frame into a rigid, load-bearing chassis engineered to prevent joint looseness under repeated daily use. The natural rattan webbing is recessed into the inner wood rebate, allowing the cane to flex under seated weight without placing tension on the primary timber joints.
In everyday dining, the breathable rattan back provides responsive posture support, while the high-density cushioned seat sustains comfort through long family meals. The hand-eased solid wood edges feel smooth when pulling the chair forward, protected by a durable matte finish that resists handling marks and spills. Conceived and custom-made by NICCHRIS in Malaysia, the Kai chair brings honest woodworking craft into the dining room.
