KUIH Stool
An Authorial Study in Layered Volume, Parametric Joinery & Wood Carcass-Plywood Composite Engineering
Kuih Stool | Upholstered Pouf by NICCHRIS
Inspired by Layers, Shaped with Soft Curves
The Kuih Stool by NICCHRIS takes inspiration from the familiar layered appearance of traditional kuih. Its design features a generously rounded upper body resting on a smaller upholstered base, creating two distinct layers that give the stool its name and character.
What makes Kuih interesting is how the upper section curves gently outward before narrowing towards the base. Rather than having straight sides like a conventional stool, its rounded shape gives it a fuller appearance, while the recessed lower section creates a visible separation between the two layers. From the side, the stool almost resembles a soft cushion resting on another.
The fabric upholstery follows these curves without interrupting the shape. In the textured fabric shown, the surface adds another dimension to the design, with the gentle folds and rounded edges becoming more noticeable as light falls across them.
Material Authenticity & Engineering Authority
Carcass & Plywood Composite Architecture
Constructed with a heavy-duty internal frame integrating a structural carcass and cross-laminated structural plywood formwork. Controlled dehumidification seasoning neutralizes internal material stresses to prevent frame deflection across air-conditioned living spaces.
Parametric Joinery & Skeletal Anchorage
Kuih’s internal frame utilizes parametric joinery routines to calculate load paths across tiered radial surfaces. Interlocking internal corner blocks and high-tensile torque anchor plates permanently eliminate frame flex, racking, and squeaks.
Multi-Density Cold-Cured Ergonomic Core
Cold-cured foam cores enveloped in breathable Dacron batting yield an immediate supple surface embrace, followed by progressive core support that prevents cushion depression and seating fatigue over years of daily enjoyment.
Artisanal Tailoring in Fabric & Premium Fabric
Panels are hand-tailored with micro-stitch precision along tiered architectural seams. Available in standard designer fabrics or premium textured weaves that resist fabric pooling and age gracefully over time.
Architectural Spatial Versatility
Kuih is engineered for interior architects, spatial stylists, and discerning homeowners curating environments defined by sculptural fluidity and material authority. Curated as an agile companion in an expansive living pavilion, arranged in conversational clusters before a low coffee table, or positioned as a refined vanity seat in a private dressing suite, its low-profile silhouette maintains uninterrupted sightlines throughout the interior. Every stool is custom made to commission in Malaysia, accommodating bespoke dimensions and tailored fabric specifications.
Looking for cohesive interior curation? Pair the Kuih Stool alongside the bulbous contours of the Bubbly Stool or nest it beside the crisp cylindrical profile of the Pom Pom Stool.
